As a Derby virgin, I decided I needed a crash course in all things roller girl this month especially if we’re dedicating an entire issue to the sport.

To kick start my effort, the first couple items on my covet list are sure to make me (or any other fangirl wannabes) look like a seasoned fan at any bout. Look the part with these must haves:

Customized Fan Girl Gear—Seriously who doesn’t need a shirt that reads, “You Snooze, You Bruise” or “If You Can’t Play Nice, Play Derby?” I know I do. And, if like me, you’re on the hunt to outfit yourself for a bout check out Customized Girl. They’ll hook you up with all the derby merch you can handle. From tailored jersey tees to cheer shorts and mesh gear bags to iPhone covers this online derby hub allows you to purchase from their assortment of designs or customize your own. For around twenty bucks you can hit the track in style. No minimum orders and custom designs are included in the prices.

Polaroid Instant Cam—Going retro at the rink never looked so good. Take along the Polaroid 300 Instant Camera to catch shots of all the action and your favorite derby girls. This cam shoots out business card size instant pics, old school style. Catch all the action in seconds and create a collection for bragging rights with all your friends. Or better yet, take them rink-side after the match and snag an autograph of your favorite derby gals. The Polaroid 300 retails for just under $70. Film will set you back another $12, but well worth the price to be the it girl at the game.

Now that my fan-girldom has been established, I’m ready to roll with the rest of them. Here’s what I covet to get in the game:

Fresh Meat Package—If we’re gonna play with the big girls, it’s time to lace up. Roller Girl Skates offers a “Fresh Meat Package” complete with boots, a helmet, elbow, wrist and knee pads, lube, an elephant wrench and a t-shirt. All for the sweet price of $234.99. If that’s not an incentive to get your lazy ass off the couch then you’ve stumped me. For those of you looking to upgrade your gear Roller Girl Skates has the pulse on the hottest Riedells (a single pair can set you back almost $500) and will customize a package to meet your personal derby needs.

Bad Ass Knee HighsSock it To Me’s Bad Ass Knee Highs will leave your opponents quaking in their boots. Watch out. Who’s the bad ass on the rink? Oh that’s right, you with these ultra keen socks. A total steal at $9. Plus I have to give props to Portland’s own Sock It To Me, they’ve been paving the knee-high comeback for nearly a decade with designs like ninjas, gnomes and sock monkeys. That’s all kinds of awesome in my book.

Sweet Dreams—Feeling a little creaky after the bout? Sore neck? A bruising back after a horrific take down? Sweet Dreams will ease your aching muscles and ensure you’ll be ready to roll in time for the next one. Try one of their soothing lavender and flax-seed filled heat wraps. Pop it into the microwave for two to three minutes and then let the relaxing scent of natural herbs and heat work their magic. I recommend the large heat wrap. Find them at a health, natural or specialty boutique near you. Sweet Dreams wraps and eye pillows range anywhere from $15-$40+.
